Branch Meeting: The upcoming branch meeting is scheduled for October 12, 2008, 3:00 PM, at the home of Barbara Baldwin. Jonathon Grasse will share his ideas about ethnomusicology, world music theory, composition, and music education in a presentation derived form his work at the Institute for the Pedagogies of World Music Theories. Topics will include Brazilian rhythmic styles, Indonesian gamelan, and essentials of 'comparative' music theories as they might apply to music education.

A composer, ethnomusicologist, and electric guitarist, Jonathon is the only recipient of UCLA's doctoral level cognate in ethnomusicology designed for composers (Ph.D. 1999). He has performed and researched Indonesian gamelan and Brazilian music styles, and has published articles and reviews on American composer Lou Harrison and Brazilian popular music history. His compositions have been performed in China, Germany, Finland, Brazil, and in the US. Jonathon has delivered conference papers in Rio de Janeiro, Yokohama, and throughout the US. His recent work on Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos was featured at conferences in Los Angeles and at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and is to be published by the Guitar Foundation of America. He is an assistant professor of music at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Young Artist Guild/Young Composers Guild Concert: Teachers, students and the public are invited to attend our MTAC sponsored Young Artist Guild / Young Composers Guild concert featuring pianist/composer Michael Delfin on October 19, 2008 at 4:00 pm at the University of Redlands, Watchorn Hall. Admission is free of charge. The recital program includes: Scarlatti’s Sonata in A minor, K. 54, L. 241 by Domenico Scarlatti, Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 "Waldstein” by Beethoven, Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60 and Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, Op. 39, and Delfin’s own original compositions Ballade No. 1 and Suite of the Sierras.

Michael Delfin received four significant state-level performance honors in 2008: membership in MTAC’s Young Artist Guild, top prize in the Celia Mendez Young Pianist’s Beethoven Competition, pianist in the FTM premiere of Paul Chihara’s Fantasy with trio members Kevin Chen and Saebyeol Kim, and the McGaughey Platinum Prize in the Glendale Piano Competition. A highlight of 2007 and 2008 for Michael was his attendance at the renowned Aspen Music Festival and School. In 2006 Michael became a first-time winner in MTAC’s State Composition Contest, an honor he repeated at the Riverside State Convention YCG with a performance of his piano composition entitled Forest Fire. In 2007 he received the honor of YCG membership. Michael’s past awards include first prize in the 2006 Sylvia M. Ghilglieri Memorial Piano Competition; 2006 State Convention Contemporary Music Seminar and winner of the State Composition Contest; 2007 MTAC State Convention Panel Honors and YCG Concert; KVPR Young Artists Spotlight performances. He has participated in master classes with Misha Dichter, Yoheved Kaplinsky (The Juilliard School), John Perry (The Colbun School), Craig Sheppard (University of Washington, Seattle), Paul Badura-Skoda, Dr. Stewart Gordon (Dept. Chair of Keyboard Studies, USC), and Sujeeva Hapugalle.

Michael has studied piano for ten years, the past nine with Carol Oaks. He is currently a high school senior at Tower Christian School and the ongoing pianist of Grace Bible Church of Fresno. Aside from music, Michael considers some of his favorite pastimes to karate, camping, and theology.

Mandatory meeting for all Certificate of Merit Teachers: All teachers who plan to participate in Certificate of Merit in 2009, either Path A or Path B, plan to attend the mandatory CM teacher meetings. There are two: Sunday, September 14 at 3:00 pm and Monday, September 15 at 10:00. Both will be held at the home of Lind Carrier.

At convention this year those of us CM Chairs who have not yet done so, were strongly encouraged by the state CM committee to develop teacher participation contracts. It is very important for you to come to one of these meetings to find out what that is all about.

Music Students Service League (MSSL) Information Meeting: The Redlands Branch MSSL group, a student run organization, has scheduled an information meeting for September 8, 7:30 PM. Students who wish to join or learn more about this community outreach group are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Branch Meeting: The first Branch Meeting of the year is scheduled for August 31, 2008, 3:00 PM, at the home of Nancy Walthall. The featured speaker is Dr. Stephen Moore. There will also be a light potluck of finger foods.

Dr. Stephen Moore is Associate Professor of Piano at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. He continues a performance career as a soloist with recent solo performances in Taipei, Taiwan and Olympia WA, and as a chamber musician with violinist Pavel Farkas as part of the California Philharmonic's chamber music series. He served on the National board for the Music Teacher's National Association (04-05) and was President of the Dalcroze Society of America (00-02).

Stephen has co-authored two books published by Alfred.com: "The Rhythm Inside" and "Rhythm One-on-One." He will present a lecture/demonstration on the latter book published in 2004. The focus of "Rhythm One-on-One" is on applications of Eurhythmics to performance and using Dalcroze techniques in the studio lesson. Copies of the book will be available at a reduced price.
