About the MTAC

The Music Teachers' Association of California, incorporated in 1897, is a professional organization of approximately 4,200 members. Throughout its 100 year history, MTAC has dedicated its efforts towards the pursuit of excellence in music education.

Each of the over sixty branches throughout the state - from Humboldt County to San Diego - maintains its own schedule of programs and activities and participates in statewide projects and programs.

Mission Statement and Goals - Association


The mission of Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) is the pursuit of excellence in music education:
1. To promote the stability of the music teaching profession,
2. To maintain the high professional standards of our members,
3. To maintain the exacting qualifications for membership in the organization establishing the active member as a qualified, accredited teacher,
4. To promote the development of musical potential and ability in students.

 

Mission Statement and Goals - Foundation


The mission of Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) Foundation is to facilitate the programs of the MTAC Association through financial support. This support is given to programs such as:
1. Student Scholarship Needs
2. MTAC members in need;
3. Community Outreach through the MTAC branches; and
4. Artistic programs of the MTAC Association


Our Code of Ethics


Music Teachers’ Association of California is an organization founded and incorporated in 1897 under the laws of the State of California to promote the welfare of the music teacher, and to elevate the educational and teaching standards of its members. The exacting qualifications for membership in the association establish the member as a qualified and accredited teacher in the community, thus insuring a professional status. The code of ethics maintains a high standard of personal and professional conduct.
We, the members of the Music Teachers’ Association of California, having dedicated ourselves to the advancement of the standards in music education shall:
· Maintain the highest moral standards and conduct towards colleagues, students and the community
· Participate in the activities of the Association
· Respect the dignity and work of our colleagues
· Develop and maintain a professional relationship between teachers and students
· Encourage, guide and develop students toward fulfillment of their musical potential
· Participate in and encourage students to be involved in community music activities.


Redlands Branch Mission Statement


The purposes of this Branch shall be the promotion of musical culture, the pursuit of excellence in music education and the sponsorship of evens and programs for the general interest of music teachers and the community.

 

Redlands Branch History


The Redlands Branch was the seventh branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California to be chartered. It was chartered in 1917 and Lucia Smith was elected the first president. Many names have figured prominently in the history of the branch. Some of the presidents were:

Up to 1955, there were 35 branches in the State. During the next two years (1955-57) when two of our members (Vera Van Loan and Helen Daun) were on the State Board, eleven additional branches were organized. With Helen Daun as State Extension Chairman, four more branches were later organized, making Redlands indirectly responsible for adding a total of fifteen branches to the State roster.

The State Convention was held in Redlands in 1964.
